Things that I have learned so far this year in public relations, are being prepared, persevering, and don’t procrastinate.

If you come with the prepared mindset that you can do whatever you want.  I came in with the mindset at first that this was impossible to do and no one person can do a 40-paged paper about a client they barely even knew.  I was quickly proved wrong.  Although this class is very hard, life is hard, every time you finish a battle you’re working your way into another.  I started out slow, slacking off, missing assignments and all the time I was thinking, “that’s nothing and I can make it up later.”  This class told me that if you slack off and you miss something due here is just like you slacking off and missing a day in your career, just like your career you miss to many and you will be fired.

This class also taught me how to persevere, through all the bad times, it will get better you must weather the storm before you get to the calm. Every time your struggling with a paper or with your life in general, you must pick your head up and keep fighting. Everyone has battles that they go through, some we win and others we lose but you live to fight another day. This class is a prime example of it, all year I was struggling thinking that there was no way of finishing my Campaign Plan book. Well I did it!!! I finished my plan book with time for edits and time to spare. It shows that if you keep doing the work and keep practicing it in life you can get it done if its possible. The little edits we did for the multiple parts of our plan book. These, little parts, or so I thought were the stepping-stones to what linked the plan book together.

Last but not least, procrastination if you procrastinate you will ultimately fail! Procrastination is the worst thing you can do for creating a plan book. All the assignments have a date for particular reasons, because if the stepping-stones are out of place then the stairs will fall. In this semesters class I either was confused and turned in the wrong assignment or didn’t do the assignment at all but whatever I didn’t do gave me terrible complications in the end while preparing your plan book. Just as in life if you procrastinate at work you work will be shoddy or unorganized making you seem like less of a person or a person that does not care about their work. Procrastination is one of the worst things you can do on a plan book because if you do such shoddy work that isn’t just something you can throw away, you must use it later to build on and make sure your plan book is up to par. The final is all about your book just like your work, its not how you start its how you finish and if you persevere through all the things and hardships and have a competitive mindset you will do well on your plan book and more important, in life as well.

My Definition of Public Relations

Looking back at my past Pr. definition, I never had one hahaha. I guess it was my ignorance that kept me from voicing my opinion. After taking full semester designated to public relations and media advertising I realized that Public Relations is mainly the interaction between the company and or public relations advertising agency and not how they communicate to the people but how they communicate WITH the people. Public relations is a theory of communication (excellence in public relations and communications hand book). Everyday we communicate to one another and this is just another version of public relations, the only thing different is public relations is used for the corporations to be able to communicate with a certain target audience and their already loyal customers. The problem was that we didn’t understand the most powerful marketing tool of all: public relations (PR).  We assumed that business success would automatically translate into recognition.  And we were overly cautious about what we said in public—so that we were “known for the right things”(VB-News). This goes to show you that if you are planning on doing any type of advertising, Public relations is the way to go. I mean public relations deals with so many different aspect of the advertising field; it deals with media, press release, brochures, posters, sneak peaks, twitter, Facebook, Instagram, audio cast, news paper articles, podcast, and etc. When it comes to public relations it is a vast subject to just give a general definition on mainly because it is constantly changing everyday. Public relations is the future of all companies and the world as we know it, everyday we are surrounded by new types of relations whether its by word of mouth, billboard, or a television commercial, public relations has had or has something to do with it.

Clearly a great PR agency or department is worth their weight in… well, perhaps currency, if not gold (Forbes). They are absolutely right without public relations companies would never know what their consumers want or what the people are looking for and sales prices would drop incredibly. Public Relations is like the Superman for all companies, they come and do research find out the target population come up with a new and improved image and then on top of that they campaign, promote, and evaluate their efforts for the company and themselves to build off of. Before their was public relations the only way to promote one’s self was to post an ad in the newspaper and now we have modernized so much that we have blogs such as this one and Facebook, and Twitter where the cost is almost nothing to promote your product or try to improve the image of your company, and we have none other to thank but public relations, because if it wasn’t for them trying to find new and better ways to promote their clients there would be no need for advertisements going through twitter and Facebook and this blog would be obsolete.

The PR consulting professional’s job is to correct an unfavorable public perception. A great example of this is Wal-Mart, a giant corporation with an amazing success story that must work daily to overcome a controversial reputation.(consulting success) If you are a Pr consultant there will soon be a time where you will be faced with a crisis, sometimes the crisis will be related to something great happening in the world, sometimes the crisis will be because of a travesty that has happened in the world and sometimes the crisis will be related to a just a freak accident that no one has ever seen happen before in their life.  The biggest crisis is how you respond to the crisis at hand going on in the world.  Different Pr agencies have different ways of handling different world events at hand, you have to prepare for the worst in case the worst does happen.  Public relations professionals take note: Crisis management is not the mastery of spin, but preventing a PR nightmare. Read the following tips from communications consultant Allan Bonner, a specialist in crisis management and media training, and then ask yourself whether or not your company or PR firm is prepared for the crisis the just might be around the corner.(e-releases)

When the most controversy happens it happens when we are least prepared.  As a great Pr consultant you need to ALWAYS be prepared.  During the super bowl after the on-routing that the Seattle Seahawks were giving the Denver Broncos the Pr Consultants for Pornhub quickly went to twitter and made a crucial tweet stating, ” Don’t Try Uploading the Game to Pornhub because we don’t allow rape.”(Pornhub-twitter) Although this was not a world ending crisis this was a a crisis to very many people watching the game, tweeting how much they were disgusted by the outcome and what the Seattle Seahawks were doing to the Denver Broncos. To post a tweet like this took courage and left Pornhub with probably one of the top outings of the twitter world with that tweet.
This just goes to show that no matter what the situation a great Pr consultant must be ready for anything at anytime, many people had never heard of Pornhub until the night of that tweet, in an advertising aspect that was great publicity and great timing for the Pr consultant to make that tweet.

advocacy in Pr

Being a an advocate of pubic relations I always say, “Stand up for what you believe and follow your dreams.” This quote relates to the public relations world in many types of scenarios.  As PR consultants, it is our main job to back up our client 100% of the time. When doing so, advocacy in public relations is thrust into play.

Advocacy is “the act of pleading or arguing in favor of something, such as a cause, idea, or policy; active support (Dictionary.com).” Advocacy is one of the main reasons why many different types of companies and incorporations are so successful. In order to be successful you have to have a team that backs you up, fights for you and builds you up. That goes for any experience you put yourself into.  Any realistic action that comes into your imagination you can do, it is your supporters who build upon what you done an make it all that it is

I did some research and found some easy and quick steps for a better advocacy group. The six steps involve (asaecenter):

Set Goals

  • Don’t just jump into public relations, do your research first
  • Make sure u have a goal in mind at the end of your campaign

Identify Your Strengths:

  • Always start with your strongest positions- this will help get the ball rolling.
  • Be able to back up our statements with evidence, to increase your credibility.

Stay on task:

  • Since you have identified your goals strengths and weaknesses work on them
  • Dont take time getting your point across do it immediately.

Be able to defend and argue your case:

  • It is your job to know how to argue your case and defend it.
  • Make sure you communication tactics will be effective and successful.

Respect your coworkers:

  •  Be cordial and respectful do not disrespect your audience
  • Being calm, respectful and understanding goes a long way.

Everyone must participate:

  • Be sure to make all members participate in one way or another- no one likes a lazy teammate
  • The more participating the better the brainstorming, the quicker and less shoddy the work is done

Research in Public Relations

Research is probably one of the most overrated things you can do in college , it seems like for every single page you write you have to look up 5 or more different credited websites to find the substantial amount of evidence to help support your position in the particular matter.  “In order to be successful in the endeavor, a public relations program must be adjusted to the group of people to whom it is directed (Public opinion quarterly pg. 54)  When it comes to public relations, public relations agencies are constantly researching demographics and other things to help better their clients image or brand to the public.  In order to be a Public Relations practitioner you have to have a background in all different types of aspect and research is one of them.  “What you don’t know CAN hurt you.  I think that rings very true here. There are plenty of other points in Lean In that I’m sure people will think are more central to its concept than the ones above” (Dave Fleet) Public relations practitioners have to be up to date on basically everything going on in modern day society and some things that have happened in the past, because as everyone knows history tends to repeat itself.  Without doing research, whether its qualitative, quantitative, primary or secondary, you will never be able to fully help your client gain the proper customer base they deserve and eventually you too will be hurting your client more than helping them.

For example, if i were to tell everyone that reads this blog that the Apple Industry’s stock value is going to crash, people that read this blog would expect me to show proof of how i know, whether it was from data, research, prior experiences, or some other credentials that would give me a base of creditability.  Without that people would think i was talking out of the side of my neck and just creating slander, but if i had proof say from reliable sources, or valuable data helping me further prove my statement than people would be more likely to believe that what I was saying was true.

Even today public relations agencies are trying to out branch to different cities, regions, territories, and countries across the world.  “There is also a dire need to extend our analyses of public relations in different regions by going beyond a couple of conceptual or theoretical underpinnings and also exploring how contextual variables external to the organization (such as culture, political system, economic system, and media system) influence public relations activities in various parts of the world. Among other things, such linkages will increase the predictive capabilities of the body of knowledge of global public relations” (The Global Book of Relations 2003, pg 2).  This one quote alone shows that everyday public relations agencies research so they can be better apt to reaching out and broadening their companies or clients brand base across the world.

Diversity in PR

As the country sees individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences in roads in areas of business and government, it is important for the public relations industry to reflect the society we live in (Council of Public Relations Firms).  I believe that in order for more businesses to strive in todays economy, they must diverse themselves.  The world is such a diverse place now and America as a whole is just like a big melting pot with all different kinds of cultures and ethnicities all in one.  In order for businesses to be able to compete with one another they must have a multi-cultural background.  There are so many different types of customers public relations agencies try to reach out to in order to create a branding image for their client or corporation.  The best corporations have a wide following base of customers from all different places of the world.  The more a company can expand, the better off they will be in the work environment.  Diversing the public relations work place can not only make that possible but in a article i read it states that ”diversity of thought at your business can boost innovation and creative problem-solving. People bring different cultures, backgrounds, and personalities to the table — and those differences shape how they think” (Griswold 2013).

Examples of effective diversity management illustrated the connection between diversity and the strategic management of public relations.(Linda Childers Hon & Brigitta Brunner )  Having a more diverse company can be the best thing to happen in the workplace both ethnic wise and demographic wise.  It shows that the company can relate more with their consumers and will do what ever it takes to please the customer base.  This shows the consumers that they will be welcomed with open arms and not discriminated against rather than just used and thrown to the side.  Also it gives security to the upcoming youth of different ethnic backgrounds, where they feel they can work together as a team and grow rather than throwing each other under the bus and eventually hurting the company.
